Mainly Mum’s Christmas Journey - December 09

Our annual child-free evening for the mums, dads and carers...
it is mainly mums that do come but dads are always welcome too… was another success with a food-filled jaunt around
our lovely Isle. Angus-John kindly drove us around in the
mini-bus as we sampled lovely courses of food at different venues. Beginning at Judith’s house we enjoyed some
warming soup, oatcakes and other tasty nibbles while
answering 20 questions about ourselves that we weren’t
to reveal until later in the evening.

It was then on to Ishbel’s house where 16 of us squeezed into the lounge for the main course which included risotto, lasagne and a wee game of pass the parcel, testing the parent’s knowledge of things to do with mainly music. Kirsty was the worthy winner this year! At each stop Judith read out answers to a variety of questions we had answered including favourite colours, person we’d most like to meet, bad habits and best subject at school which we then had to guess who had written what. This provided much laughter and insight into each others lives in a fun way!

Hannah’s Christmas grotto was our stop for dessert and we all managed to fit in some banoffee pie and chocolate trifle in very festive surroundings. Coffee, mince pies, cheese and chocolates were awaiting those of us with a little space in our stomachs at Becky’s house and we were able to relax there until the early hours knowing it was our final stop of the night. Again a fun night was had by all and friendships were deepened as we enjoyed some fun and food together.

See Five Angels Flying All Around - December 09

Our Christmas session this year gave us the great opportunity to re-tell the story of Jesus’ birth with the children participating as super shepherds and sparkly angels. As the children arrived they had the opportunity to make an angel with their parent and they had lots of fun colouring, cutting and sticking.

The Christmas story was illustrated on the screen as the children sang about the different people and animals who all played their part in this bible story. There were special Christmas songs sung such as ‘Five angels’ and ‘The Shepherd’s song’ as well as songs that we sing throughout the year such as ‘Tickly rain’ and ‘This is the way the lady rides.’ Bells were ringing and shakers shaking throughout our session and the effort parents made to dress their child really helped to make our final session of the year extra special.

Some Christmas themed baking was well deserved and gratefully received at the end which our faithful tea and coffee ladies served up allowing everyone to have a good blether and rest while the children got into the boxes of toys!

Mainly Mum's Night - December 08

With Christmas fast approaching and perhaps some people feeling a bit run off their feet we took the chance to have a night to recharge the batteries. Our ‘mainly mum’s‘ night was a chance for any parent or carer that comes along to our to group to enjoy some company together without the usual distraction of a little one or two!! The winter weather had taken hold that night but it didn’t stop 10 of us venturing out for some fun and games. Lovely food and mulled wine was enjoyed and a wee quiz was squeezed in too to satisfy the competitive amongst us! (Di?!) The Christmas Bumps battled against Team JACK with rounds on Tiree, Christmas, Mum knowledge and an active mainly music round! Team Jack were the champions that night but hopefully to challenge again soon. A fun night was had by all and one person said they couldn’t remember laughing that much in a long time!

Christmas at Mainly Music - December 08

Jingling bells and twinkling stars were amongst some of our music making during this festive season. Christmas gave us the perfect opportunity at our sessions to enjoy some old classic carols as well as learning some new, fun songs about shepherds watching, angels singing and sleeping baby Jesus. Our final session of the year saw us tell the story of the nativity in between themed songs and the children pulled out the different characters of their music bags to set the scene.

Our very first mainly music dad bravely came which we were all very pleased to see and hope this will encourage any other dads to venture out with their children to our group!

The buzz and excitement during our Christmas session was evident for all to see and hope this continues in the New Year when we start again for more fun and music making!

And we’re off…..

Our first meeting of mainly music last Tuesday went off with a really encouraging start. Twenty-five children from around the island aged between 2 months & 5 years ventured out to see what mainly music was all about. As Judith welcomed the families and got them registered, they received a music bag with all the props needed for their music session and the children sat (& ran around!) waiting to see what would take place. Ishbel then led a half hour session of songs, movement & rhyme. Old and new songs were sung with lots of actions and movement to keep the children & grown-ups on their toes! Here we go round the mulberry bush & Head, shoulders, knees and toes were amongst the old favourites while I spy and the feather song were popular new ones. Hannah & Di then served the children with some well deserved juice and biscuits after which they had time to play with another and with the toys. The mums and carers then enjoyed some tasty home baking and tea while chatting and catching up. All in all, a really exciting first mainly music was had by all and we’re looking forward to the next one for more fun together.
